Daniel E. Sutherland, Distinguished Professor of History
A native Michigander, Professor Donald Sutherland has taught in southern universities since 1977, including the last twenty-two years at the University of Arkansas. A wide-ranging and prolific author, Sutherland stands in the first rank of specialists on guerrilla warfare and its impact on the Confederate home front. His much acclaimed Seasons of War: The Ordeal of a Confederate Community, 1861-1865 received a Pulitzer Prize nomination and numerous awards, including the coveted Douglas Southall Freeman Prize. Prof. Sutherland is currently completing a book, Civil War Guerrillas.
